An Interview With Dr. Brent Thiel

Brent Thiel, MD, joined The Everett Clinic in 2003. He received his medical degree and completed his Orthopedic Surgery residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Thiel is board certified in Orthopedic Surgery. In his spare time he enjoys fly-fishing, skiing and spending time with his family.

Interview With Dr. Brent Thiel, The Everett Clinic

DR. THIEL: I'm Brent Thiel, and I'm an orthopedic surgeon at The Everett Clinic. I grew up in the Puget Sound, and went to undergraduate at Seattle Pacific University. I graduated from there in 1988, and went back to Medical College-Wisconsin, in Milwaukee for medical school. I stayed there for my residency training in orthopedic surgery. I have been at The Everett Clinic since 2003.

The most common procedure I do here at The Everett Clinic is shoulder arthroscopies. I perform between 200 - 300 shoulder scopes a year, and probably do a similar number of knee arthroscopies. Those are the main ones we do. We also do a fair number of joint replacements. That involves shoulder, knee, and hip replacement surgery.

INTERVIEWER: Why did you choose to become an orthopedic surgeon?

DR. THIEL: Mostly because of my wife, who was a gymnast at Seattle Pacific University, and had multiple injuries and multiple surgeries, along with some of the other gymnasts that were on the team. I got to see what they went through, and their recovery. A lot of them were able to get back to what they could do before, because of orthopedic surgeons.

INTERVIEWER: Why would you refer a friend to The Everett Clinic?

DR. THIEL: The main reason I would refer a friend here for orthopedic care is because we do what's right for the patient; we try to do what's right for every patient. My partners and the staff do a very good job of that. I wouldn't hesitate to have friends, family or even myself taken care of by any of my partners.

INTERVIEWER: Does the fact that this is a physician-owned clinic have any impact on you or your work?

DR. THIEL: Being a physician-owned group, we do our best to direct the care that we're able to do. The Clinic really does a very good job letting me do what I need to do to take care of the patient. I don't need to do any business, or worry about billing. My job is to take care of the patient, and that's the main reason I joined the clinic.

INTERVIEWER: Can you tell us about the role of technology in your practice?

DR. THIEL: Some of the great things that technology has brought to us include our advanced medical record system: it's all electronic. With people that are having surgery, during a lot of arthroscopy surgery we're taking pictures or video, and we're able to download that on the system. It becomes part of their permanent record, and we're able to review that when they come back for their post-operative visits. Previously, we sent patients home with their pictures, and they often forget them or lost them. We always have them on the record now.

INTERVIEWER: What are you most proud of, in your career?

DR. THIEL: I'm probably most proud of our staff. Our staff does an amazing job. . We really do our best to take care of each individual and that's probably what I'm most proud of.
