A Florence (or boiling) flask, made with Pyrex® glass, is filled to the brim with 500 mL of water at 100 °C. If the temperature in the lab drops to 42 °C, how much water (in ml) could be added to the flask to fill it back to the brim?
Answer:
This is a problem in thermal expansion, or density changing with temperature.
If you have a table showing the density of water at different temperatures, you can calculate how much the volume shrinks when the temperature is changed from 100 C to 42 C. That amount will be your answer.
