Glass Containers And Water Filters Are Safer And Healthier Than Plastic: How Water Quality Is Affected By Water Storage Practices
Once again, another news story reveals that our drinking water is not safe in plastic bottles. An NPR story this week highlights a company that is working on developing a different kind of plastic that will not leach estrogen-like chemicals into our drinking water from the plastic bottles in which it is stored.
Though the story focuses on the future of a safer plastic in which we can store our water and food, it reveals the uncommonly known fact that plastics contaminate our food and water with estrogen mimickers, also known as hormone disruptors. Hormone disruptors get into our bodies because our plastic bottles are leaching them into our bodies. This affects our physical health and the health of our environment for generations to come. Hormone disruptors get into our bodies because they are leaching out of the plastic bottles that hold our drinking water. Plastic water bottles create two major health concerns; one is for our physical health and the other is for our environmental health.
The Truth about Plastic
Plastic has been attractive in the past because it is light weight and durable, but there is no free lunch and there is a trade off to having this convenience. The short term conveniences of plastic water bottles must be compared to the long term risk to health and environment. The health concern regarding plastic-leaching chemicals was first made public in the mid 1990s. Researchers discovered hormone disruptors leaching from plastic test tubes distorted their scientific research. (1) The chemicals found in plastic threaten our health and sexual organs and our off spring for generations to come.
The other factor concerning plastic is that not only 86 percent ends up in the landfill costing society billions of dollars in unsustainable consumption of petroleum products, but also plastic products are wastefully used for one-time packaging of food and drink. This is a moral issue since it robs future generations of natural resources and leaves them a chemical cocktail that will leach hormone-mimicking chemicals into the life cycle for all life forms to consume in their drinking water.
The use of these products also:
• Cause health problems that are not fully understood.
• Cause men problems with prostate functions.
• Leach hormone disrupters into the genetic pool.
• End up as trash in our fresh waters and oceans and ingested by animal and marine life.

Safe, Cost Effective Alternatives to Plastic Water Bottles
Glass Water Containers
When it comes to drinking water I recommend everyone avoid putting filtered water in plastic bottles. Glass is a great container for drinking water. Glass is inert and that means it is safe to use for storing and carrying water. I prefer a Mason or Ball quart jar and have used one daily since I was a child. Glass is reusable for filtered drinking water without concern for its integrity deteriorating or its leaching dangerous chemicals into your drinking water. If you must use an unbreakable container for water be sure and buy a chemical-free water bottle. It is worth a little extra money to support long term, better health.
In-Home Water Filters and Filtration Systems
Instead of buying your water in plastic containers, purchase a water filter that can remove organic and inorganic chemicals. Since tap water can have a variety of problems that affect your health, consider the option of a water filtration system. There is an investment cost to get started, but over time you will save a great deal of money and drink healthier water. Whole-house water filtration systems provide safer water for bathing and teeth brushing, and under-the-counter water filtration systems will benefit people, pets and the environment.
