About ESFSC

ESRFSC is comprised of private citizens and advised by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service (USFS), The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF), and the U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Inyo County, BLM, and USFS have provided limited financial support, through modest grants.

What we do

The Council collaborates with local volunteer fire departments and assists CDF as they train fire prevention volunteers to perform residential fire hazard inspections within Eastern Sierra communities. Volunteers work with homeowners to raise awareness concerning wildfire risks and methods of home hazard reduction.

ESRFSC has created community fuel breaks and defense projects, and is working within eastside communities to create local fire safe councils and to develop codes and regulations that lessen risks of wildfire exposure.

Fire Safe Councils started in 1993. Inyo and Mono Counties began their council in 1998 and incorporated in 2001.

The goal is to have every household aware of wildfire risks.

Objectives:

  •  start other fire safe councils
  •  provide promotional material
  •  train new councils in fire prevention techniques
  •  provide manuals
  •  provide fire safe plant guides for homeowner use

The Eastern Sierra Regional Fire Safe Council is a non-profit organization created to advise citizens of Inyo and Mono Counties on how best to deal with the threat by wildfires to homes, communities and natural resources in the Community-Wildlands interface.

What is the Community-Wildlands Interface?

The interface is where residential development and wildlands converge. During the past century, the U.S. Forest Service and the California Department of Forestry focused on fire control efforts upon fire suppression. Throughout California, fire is a natural process, with a defined role in our environment. A study of fire history in Inyo and Mono Counties reveals .... continued....
